Story: POWERFUL winds killed at least one person as wild weather swept across southern Australia today, causing mayhem in Victoria.

People were warned to stay out of central Melbourne and thousands of homes in Victoria were left without power as winds of up to 100km/h hit the state.

The State Emergency Service (SES) said it had responded to more than 1200 calls by 3pm (AEDT) with hundreds of trees falling across roads and on houses, cars and power lines.

Roofs were blown off houses in Port Fairy and Edenhope in the state's west, while 10 people were taken to hospital following a three-car accident in a dust storm near Buangor, also in the west.
