Ice-storm rocks the region

Storm News: Ontario, Canada
March 07, 2007

It was lights out at 6 p.m. for a vast swath of the region thanks to Thursday’s ice-storm.The Municipality of Bluewater, which was one of the areas hardest hit by storm-fuelled power outages, opened its generator-powered community centres in Zurich and Bayfield to those seeking refuge from cold homes on Thursday night.Bluewater Councillor Tyler Hessel, who was one of the volunteers manning the Bayfield community centre Friday morning, reports about 15 hydro poles were knocked down by whipping winds along the Highway 21 corridor between Grand Bend and Bayfield, resulting in that section’s closure Friday morning.Hessel notes a number of municipal staff members and councillors, as well as Bluewater Mayor Bill Dowson, had been kept hopping by delivering water to seniors and staying in regular contact with Ontario Hydro.
