100's evacuated due to flood fears

Earth News: United Kingdom
County Under Water

March 05, 2007
HUNDREDS of people were evacuated from their homes this evening due to fears torrential rain could subject parts of Northampton to severe flooding.
In a chilling reminder of the horrific floods of Easter 1998 - which claimed two lives - a severe flood warning for a section of the River Nene in Great Billing was put in place by the Environment Agency this afternoon, with residents at Billing Aquadrome given just minutes notice to leave their homes.
The heavy rainfall, which comes hot on the heels of torrential downpours over the weekend, left sections of the county submerged, raising fears the River Nene would be unable to cope with much more rain.
