Snow closes Athens airport, snarls traffic

Breaking Earth News
Greece

A cold snap zapped Greece during the weekend, blanketing the country in snow and dropping temperatures as low as 12 degrees in northern parts of the country, Ekathimerini.com reported Monday. Officials said about 70 villages were snowed in late Sunday, mostly in central Greece and on islands in the Aegean Sea.

Athens International Airport was closed Sunday evening into early Monday morning, canceling both domestic and international flights.

Driving conditions worsened Sunday as snow turned to ice on roads and officials asked Athenians to remain off the roadways if possible.
