Weather ruins many U.K. New Year events

Storm News: Great Britain
LONDON, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- Rain and heavy winds forced the cancellation of many New Year's outdoor civic celebrations in Scotland, Northern Ireland and England.
Just 200,000 people celebrated outdoors in London Sunday night as howling winds created problems for fireworks, The Times of London reported.
Northern England, Northern Ireland and Scotland had the worst weather. New Year's events were canceled in Glasgow and Edinburgh, where winds gusted up to 70 mph, and street parties in Belfast, Liverpool and Newcastle upon Tyne were also canceled.
In a bizarre twist, a new Days Inn Hotel that had only been open for five hours in Haverhill was devastated by a freak tornado Saturday, the Times said.
